o Shampoos containing caffeine-if the correct dosage is found, studies are in the test-tube stages
o Low level laser therapy-only the "Hair Max Laser Comb" has been approved by the FDA and is sometimes effective in clinical studies, but beware, there are many "pretenders" with similar names, but only Lexington International has submitted proof of effectiveness
What Does Work in Most Cases
A dual or two pronged approach is effective in all but the worst cases. The first part of the treatment is an oral supplement that contains magnesium for women, because magnesium deficiencies can cause the problem and are very common in women.
For men, the oral supplement should contain both zinc and saw palmetto. Saw palmetto supports prostate health, as well. So, it's a good supplement for a man to take, whether or not he is concerned about baldness.
For both men and women, the supplement should contain biotin and vitamin B6. Those nutrients are essential cofactors for the production of the proteins that make up healthy hairs.
The second part of the treatment should be a topically applied ointment that contains the only compound approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of male pattern baldness and androgen sensitive baldness in women. That compound is called Minoxidil. Originally patented under the brand name, Rogaine, the generic version is now available without a prescription.
To see the best results, follow the manufacturer's directions carefully. Don't overdo it. More is not better in this case.
